As moms we can show our children what this teaching, reproof, correction, and instruction looks like.

• Teaching – Here is the way to live!

• Reproof – Don’t do that, it will hurt you.

• Correction– Here is how to make it right and start over.

• Instruction (in reproof)- Here is how to do it better next time.

 

Practice this verse with your kids:

As you are practicing this verse you can make up hand motions. For example as you say, “Breathed out by God” let’s all put out hand up to our mouth and go “HAAAAAA.” Then you can ask your kids, Do you feel you breath?

Then review how God spoke words like that about Himself. And how the Holy Spirit carried those words that God breathed into the heart of men. And then men wrote down every word God said! Tell them how awesome that is!

FINAL NOTE TO PARENTS:

Mommies feel free to sit with your children and participate with them during Fully Alive Kids! Imitation of you is so significant! They will learn to worship Jesus with all their strength as you do! Remember that this a “Hannah-Samuel” environment – as when Hannah set Samuel before the Lord! Jesus asked to adults to let the little children come…they come wiggles, giggles and all. So help them listen and be respectful, but a bit of wiggle is fine! And there are toys in play area if you need them. That is a place to “help” younger ones participate!

Fully Alive Moms: Part 2

Recently we learned that fully alive moms love God by obeying His word, and by diligently teaching His commands to their children. And because we want to be fully alive moms, we will be looking at how/when we should teach our children according to Deuteronomy 6:6-9.

How do we teach our children?

The simple answer is talk.

1. Talk to your children while you are sitting around the house. (Duet. 6: 7)

What is amazing about God’s word is that He outlines ways, times, and places for us to talk about Him. He shows us how we can know Him and ways that we can teach our children to know Him. The first way we teach our children God’s word is by talking to them when we are at home. When we are sitting around the table, eating. When we are on the couch, when we are on the floor playing with toys, etc… God’s word should be on our lips, His commands on our tongue.

2. Talk to your children when you go out.

This teaching isn’t just to stay within the four walls of our homes. Duet. 6:7 says, talk “when you walk by the way.” As we are encountering people, creation, and circumstances, God’s word must be in our mouth.

If we are at the zoo, teach them about how God created the animals. Show them how creative God is when you are at the aquarium or while you are looking at flowers.

When you are at the park and your child sees another toddler running away from his mother in disobedience teach them that God has something to say about that situation. Show them that God writes to children. Tell them about Ephesian 6:1 which says, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord for this is right.”

There will be so many opportunities on the way… on the way to Wal-Mart. On the way to a friend’s house, on the way to church, or work, or where ever you may be going. Teach them.

3.Talk to your children when it is bedtime.

God’s word says, “When you lie down” talk about God’s commands (Duet. 6:7). Bedtime is a great opportunity to teach little hearts. If for no other reason besides getting to stay awake a little longer, your kids will listen. Make time to lay with them on their beds at night.

God is giving a strategic time to talk to your children. And believe me, you won’t miss the opportunity to watch a little heart open to God. You won’t want to miss out on a chance to speak into your precious babies life.

4. Talk to your children when you wake up.

Have you ever noticed how happy a baby is to see you in the morning? My sweet baby Owen always has a big square smile in the mornings, because he is so excited to see me. His little arms are outstretched as he becomes breathy at the simple site of the door opening. As I reach to embrace him, there is a moment of sheer joy, cuddles, and fresh excitement. This is an opportunity! Each morning when God’s mercies are new, I have a moment to teach, to speak, and to show my children how much God loves them.

How sad would it be if all my kids saw of me in the morning was my back to the coffee pot? And all they heard were tired grunts from a sleepy mom? I’d be missing an opportunity for God to show up in my house and speak to my children.

Don’t get me wrong. I am not a morning person. I have the same messy bun pulled up onto the top of my head that you do in the morning, but this time of the day is strategic from the Lord. There can be a welcoming, a greeting, a showing of God’s new mercies. It is a fresh day. It is a great time to teach.

5. Talk to your children all the time.

You may have noticed that the writer of Deuteronomy is using opposite terms like lying down and rising, When you are at home, when you are out, etc… This is on purpose.

What God is trying to show us is that teaching our children the ways of God is meant to be all-encompassing. This takes all of our human effort. It will encompass all of our time. But with the grace of the Lord, and the power of the Holy Spirit we will see that this truth is so important that is must be the center of our labor and life. We are fighting for our children to know the person of Jesus!

Fruit and Berry Patch

Schedule: Sept. 25, 2012

Arrival time: 10:00 a.m.

– We will go on a hayride around the farm, and will see some farm animals.

– At the end of the hayride your child will get to pick a pumpkin.

– There is also a small corn maze that the we can all go through. It should only take 5 – 10min make it through.

– Then we will have lunch together.

– They also have other fruit to pick at the farm if you and your child are interested but this will be an extra expense.

Directions:

To reach The Fruit and Berry Patch…

– Go north on N. Broadway (US 441-TN 33) approximately 4.5 miles north of I-640 / Broadway interchange.

– Turn left on Andersonville Pk. (first street past Wal-Mart shopping center) – look for the sign. Go 0.7 miles on Andersonville Pk.

– Turn right onto McCloud Rd. (first street past Halls Elementary school) – look for the sign.

– The Fruit and Berry Patch is 0.7 mi. out McCloud Rd. on the left.

Please Bring:

– Exact amount of money in cash. (This will make it easier to pay the farm.) Lauren Perkins will collect all the money when you arrive.

– A blanket to eat lunch on. (You can leave this in your car until lunch)

– A sack lunch for you and your child.

– Extra money if you want to pick more fruit or by something at the gift shop.

– And don’t forget your camera!

– Suggestions: Farms can be muddy and yucky especially after a recent rain so if your child has rainboots it may be a good idea to wear those instead of new tennis shoes.

Cost: $7.50 per child.

– This cost covers the pumpkin the child will get to pick, an apple sipper drink cup with apple juice, and a coloring book.

– (If you have a child too young to for these things you do not have to pay for that child.)

Fully Alive Moms:Part 1

We are called to be fully alive moms. Women who are “living to praise of Christ, intimate with Jesus, filled with the pleasure of God, and encountering the power of Christ” to quote Kathy Tarr. We were made for this kind of vibrant, colorful, joyful life.

As I have been studying the word this week I’ve found that this call to be fully alive in Jesus is two-fold.

First, we are called to love God.

God’s word says it perfectly, “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might” (Deut. 6: 5).

When I read verses like this, questions instantly jump into my mind like, “What does it mean to love God?” How do I actually do that?”

I love it when God answers my questions right away. Here is what I found. John 14:15 says, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”

It is so simple. If I love God, I will obey His word. I will not just say that I love God, but my actions, deeds, and life will be in line with the truth of God’s word (1 Jn. 3:18).

The Bible also says, “But whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him” (1Jo 2:5). We can actually know that we are in Christ. If we keep His word, which means obeying it, then the love of God is perfected in us.

As a mom, I need Christ’s love perfected in me because my heart is deceitful and desperately wicked on its own. I need the word of God that is “living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Heb 4:12)

This is a high calling. As a mom I must walk obediently to the Word of God because this is loving Jesus. John 14:15 says it clearly, “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And … (I love this part!)… His commandments are not burdensome” (1Jn 5:3).

Isn’t that great? Obedience isn’t a burden.

Obeying God is life. I must love God with my whole heart and the way I do that is walking in obedience to His word. Fully alive moms obey God’s word.

Second, we are called to diligently teach our children.

Deuteronomy 6:6-9 says, “And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”

We as moms (and dads) are called to diligently teach our children the word of God. This means we need to thoroughly, and carefully train our children daily. As parents we must educate our sons and daughters in the ways of God. Jesus must never be forgotten in our homes.

I found one commentators image very helpful on what it looks like to diligently teach our children, Merrill said, “The image is that of the engraver of a monument who takes hammer and chisel in hand and with painstaking carves and sketches a text into the face of a solid slab of granite. The sheer labor of such a task is daunting indeed, but once done the message is there to stay” (167).

While the idea of teaching may seem hard, the results are beautiful. Our children will know God. And listen to the promise in Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”

As we are called to teach, we must first receive the words of Jesus and then relay them to our children. Fully alive moms teach God’s word.

Ijams Nature Center Field Trip

This week for our Grow and Go week, we are going going to Ijams Nature Center.

Our schedule:

10:00a.m.- Arrive and let the kids play in the playground area. We will park at the visitor center. It’s the first large parking lot that you will see. There is a large open area with a playground that we can meet at when we first get there.

10:45 a.m.- Check out the visitor center. There are animals like frogs and other reptiles that the kids can see.

11:00a.m.- We will play a game or do some worship.

Game idea: Have the kids sit in a circle and pass around a ball. When a child gets the ball they have to name something that God created. (There will be lots of inspiration for answers all around them)  After the game we could have a prayer time where each kid could say a short prayer thanking God for something that He has created.

11:45a.m.– Lunch ( Mom’s will need to bring sack lunches for themselves and their kids) – There is a pavilion near the visitor center that I’m assuming we can eat under. But moms can bring blankets if they want to.

After lunch we could invite moms that could, to go on a short trail walk. There is one that is 0.1 mile.

– A sack lunch

– A picnic blanket (optional)

Little Seeds

Over this last spring and summer as I have tended to my vegetable garden, spiritual lessons have sprung out of little observations among the plants.  For instance, as I was tucking Brussels sprout seeds under a thin layer of soil recently, it occurred to me that a lot happens to those little seeds before they actually grow into the yummy veggies I enjoy.  First of all, the seeds are placed in prepared, weed free soil where, for a while, it appears as if nothing is happening.  But as the seeds set in the soil, rain, or water from the garden hose, moistens the outer shell of the seeds, breaking them open, activating enzymes, and waking up the embryo hidden in the seed.  As the seeds receive oxygen, favorable temperatures, and light, they germinate and soon will peep their green little sprigs up through the soil.

Those little seeds remind me so much of how our children grow spiritually.  Our youngest little ones, when they are taken to church (Fully Alive Kids) may not appear to be experiencing anything.  But, they are!!  As the Word of God gradually soaks into their hearts, they experience the presence of God in worship, and they are trained to respond rightly, our precious wee ones begin to sprout, grow, and bear good fruit.  As patient gardeners, we place our children in good soil, nurture and train them diligently, and watch with thanksgiving as the Lord makes them Fully Alive Kids!!

 

A Letter to the Moms

Dear Friends,

I loved being immersed today in the radical love of Jesus Christ as we met Him in His Word and in Worship at Fully Alive Kids!  His Holy Spirit was with us touching and transforming all of our lives in His presence!  It was such a joyous morning!

I want to personally encourage all of you in several ways as we begin this semester together: I want you moms to know that Jesus wholeheartedly welcomes the little ones into His presence, wiggly, fussy and needy, and so do we!  While we want to create an atmosphere of respect for those teaching and those listening, we don’t expect them to be little robots.  We understand there will be movement and some extra in the room.  Please be joyfully relaxed with their “child-likeness.”

Here is how you can help create the most delightful learning environment:  First, sit with your child when possible.  Just as Hannah brought little Samuel into the presence of the Lord, as soon as he was weaned ( I Sam. 1:22). You can bring your young (wiggly) ones into the presence of the Lord and help them learn to listen to His voice.  They will learn the most by watching you and the other moms worship.

When they begin to distract others, simply “help” them by inviting them to the play area in the back of the room.  Their hearts will still be absorbing His presence.

Review the lesson over and over at home with your kids this week.  Here is a brief summary of today’s lesson:

The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by hands, nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all mankind life and breath and EVERYTHING!

Discuss the glorious truths in Isaiah 40:12 and Job 38 about our great God!  He is so Amazing!! Discuss the Bible stories we re-enacted.  God’s Word is so alive!
